I need to tell you something uncomfortable. Most people who come to me convinced they're in love are actually experiencing love addiction. And there's a meaningful difference. I'm not being dramatic. Their presence makes you feel complete, alive, worthy. Their absence makes you feel empty, unsafe, worthless. You need them the way an addict needs the drug. Real love: The other person is a partner. Their presence enhances your life. Their absence is hard but manageable. You are complete with or without them, and you choose them anyway. Most people experience both at different points in a relationship. Early love addiction is normal and even necessary — it bonds couples in the early months. But if you're still running on love addiction at year 3, year 5, year 20, something is wrong. --- The Tell-Tale Signs 1. You can't imagine a future without them Real love can imagine a future without the partner and still feel okay. Love addiction cannot. "I can't live without you" sounds romantic.
